Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is commonly used to help support balanced behaviour and overall wellbeing of the horse.
Traditionally it has been used in Ayurvedic medical cultures to help manage and improve a variety of conditions, including anxiety disorders with current research also supporting its use as a general mood tonic, helping to create a state of relaxation, focus and reduced anxiety in animal and human models.
It is recommended for horses prone to stress and anxiety, and some owners have reported a decrease in stereotypies such as cribbing and weaving after supplementing their horses' diets with ashwagandha. Anecdotal evidence also suggests it can reduce stress and tension by reducing the fight-or-flight cortisol (the stress hormone) response.
In a recent study* a total of 24 horses were subjected to exercise-induced stress, separation-induced stress and noise-induced stress at specific intervals over the course of 21 days. The horses were divided into one placebo and three groups, with the Ashwagandha groups eating 2.5, 5 or 10 grams of Ashwagandha root extract daily.
Results demonstrated great value in modulating stress responses in horses exposed to stressful situations. All biomarkers assessed improved directly relative to the amount of Ashwagandha extract consumed daily, while outcomes for the placebo group remained unchanged.
