Mash Benefits
Are mashes something only old horses can eat? Can they suit younger working horses too, if so what are the benefits of feeding them?
Mash feeds, which are often very popular for senior horses, offer benefits that extend beyond the aging equine population. Traditionally, mashes are used to aid older horses with dental issues, ensuring they receive necessary nutrients without the struggle of chewing. However, mashes are very beneficial to horses of all ages, including younger, working horses.
Younger, active horses can greatly benefit from mash feeds. Firstly, mashes often provide a highly digestible source of fibre designed to support gut health and the palatable, easy-to-chew nature of a mash is ideal to tempt fussy feeders, which can be crucial during intense training or competition. Additionally, the hydration aspect of mashes is particularly beneficial in preventing colic and dehydration, common concerns for hard-working horses.
Mashes are also a great way of mixing in supplements and can be used to help disguise medication, ensuring that working horses receive all necessary dietary enhancements efficiently. Furthermore, during cold weather, a warm mash can help maintain body temperature, contributing to overall well-being and performance.
In essence, while mashes are invaluable for older horses, their benefits for younger, working horses should not be overlooked. Offering mashes can support digestive health, hydration, and nutrient intake, making them a versatile feed option for horses at all life stages.
