Senior Horse Feed: Not Just for Seniors

Senior Horse Feed: Not Just for Seniors

The choice and availability of specialist senior horse feed is today greater than ever, helping us to keep our beloved senior horses happy and healthy long into their 20s, 30s and 40s.  However, it is important to recognise that the usefulness of senior diets is not just limited to veterans, but that high quality senior feed can provide highly digestible, balanced nutrition to horses of all ages that are experiencing health issues.

Rowen Barbary Horse Feeds manufacture two high specification products that provide a unique combination that support joint, digestive, skin and coat and overall health.  Senior Support for horses requiring a high calorie diet for condition and controlled weight gain, and Keep Well for good doers requiring minimum levels of starch and sugar.

Both products contain:

  • Glucosamine & MSM – to help support joint health and mobility Senior Support and Keep Well both contain an equal ratio of Glucosamine and MSM. This will help reduce stiffness in the older horse, and ensure optimum health and flexibility in those at work.
  • Turmeric – providing at least 3% of active curcumin, alongside ground Black Pepper to enhance the bio-availability, Turmeric is included in both Senior Support and Keep Well to support overall health.
  • Yeasacc – to help promote optimum fibre and protein Senior Support and Keep Well both contain Yeasacc 1026 a live probiotic culture that has been scientifically proven to help stabilise the digestive system.
  • Vitamins & Minerals – containing 12 vitamins, 6 trace elements plus 4 major minerals both Senior Support and Keep Well will help ensure your horse is receiving a fully balanced diet for overall health and vitality.

Case Study

Name: May

Owner: Amy Bergin

Colour: Skewbald

Sex: Mare

Age: 7

Introduction

Produced by Amy since she was a youngster, May had her first season eventing in 2022 with some great results including coming 8th in her first horse trials. This year Amy would like to step May up to 90. As a good doer, Amy has to keep a careful eye on Mays weight as she is prone to weight gain, but still wants to ensure she is receiving a high specification diet to help her perform to her best.

The Product:

May is fed a daily diet of 250gm of Keep Well per day alongside a handful of chaff and ad lib fibre, to help ensure she is receiving all the necessary nutrients while keeping calories to a minimum.

“May looked dull, dusty and was prone to weight gain.  I put her on Keep Well and my goodness, she is shiny, looks fabulous and going so well. We competed in our first ODE at the weekend and the comments on how well she looked was brilliant. Thank you.” Amy Bergin
