The end of an era - Charlotte Clewlow

January ended with the end of an era for us at CJC Eventing, the lorry that we have used for over 11 years went up for sale. It holds so many memories as I was just 10 when it was bought and still on my 13.2hh pony. We have literally toured the country in it over the years. Pony club, Riding club and BE events and championships. It is going to take some time for us to get used to our newer red lorry if you see any of my team or myself wandering around an event looking lost it will probably mean we are looking for the wrong lorry! For those who manage to find us the usual tea, coffee and bacon sandwiches will of course still be available.

So our first outing in the red lorry was to do some BS jumping at Southview with Paddy who jumped a great double clear in the Discovery to win the class – I am so pleased with Paddy he looks and feels absolutely fantastic and is carrying more weight than ever (he is a difficult horse to put and keep weight on!) the change has taken place since he has been fed on Rowan Barbary Ready Mash Extra.

It was lovely to receive a copy of Absolute Horse and find that the inside cover is a full-page Rowen Barbary advert starring myself and Mr Dundee – thanks, Rowan Barbary.

Tara has come back into work this month after her holidays and we are just taking it slowly lots of hacking for a few weeks. We think she has grown a little whilst off but still looks a little croup high, suggesting she may grow some more yet.

We managed to duck the rain for our first visit to the gallops this year, as it is time to start some fitting work with the horses, we had a great time, Basil and Paddy thought it was fantastic. Lyndsay and I looked pretty happy in the pictures too.

Katie has come on in leaps and bounds she has such a fantastic attitude and I have to make sure to remember she has only been broken about 6 weeks. She jumped some barrels at home and went to Kelsall for her introduction to a course. She went round the course like she had done it loads of times. She then went to Kelsall to have her first cross country experience, she was really good, at first over jumping, then once she had been through the water it all clicked into place and she jumped more normally.  I took her to Southview to do a novice class and must admit I thought it was quite a scary course for a baby, she took it all; the atmosphere, the small working in and in fact the whole thing in her stride just rolling a couple of poles on a 15 jump course full of fillers – I am so excited about her future. Fed on Rowen Barbary ReadyMash and Rowen Barbary Power.

Paddy and Basil went  Arena Eventing, Paddy went first in the class for a lovely double clear with just 0.9 time penalties to take 4th place,  Basil then did a fantastic double clear with just 0.1 time penalty to take 1st such a good way of training ready for the start of the season.

Paddy also went for his first cross country schooling session this year, he and I were so pleased to be out in an open field and jumping some solid fences. Lyndsay also took Basil and he was on great form, giving Lyndsay the confidence to jump some bigger fences.

Joey has been on his box rest for the month, he went for an X-ray 4 weeks after his fracture and the vet is pleased with his progress, and he now has no dressing on and has another 6 weeks box rest before his next X-ray. Rowen Barbary kindly sent me some ReadyFibre Mash to try him on as he lost quite a lot of condition with the colic. He is starting to gain the condition back now with 3 feeds a day 2 Ready Mash and 1 Readyfibre mash.

The month ended with a show jump outing at which I rode Mac who went double clear to take 3rd,  Boy who jumped brilliantly to take 4th to Mac and 6th and Paddy who was on form to jump two fast double clears in the intermediate and open and take 1st in both classes.

In between all this work I did manage to clean myself up and have a fantastic night out at the hunt ball. The season feels like it is getting closer and the first entries are in, I can’t wait!
