Working Horses in Warmer Weather

Competition horses in all disciplines, from showing to eventing are expected to delivery optimum performance all year around regardless of the temperature.  The recent warmer weather we have experienced has caused some owners to become concerned about their horses welfare, with a common problem being that their horse feels “sluggish” or lacks stamina when out competing.

For horses that lack stamina additional oils can be added to the diet to help provide a source of slow release energy to promote sustained performance, but it is also important to ensure that your horse maintains hydrated particularly when competing in warmer weather as this can cause many horses to sweat substantially.  Prolonged sweating during strenuous exercise can cause horses to lose up to 15 litres of sweat in 1 hour, so it is important to replace the essential minerals lost through the use of  electrolyte supplementation.

Rowen Barbary Re-Hydrate is designed to help maintain fluid and electrolyte balance providing all the necessary minerals on a palatable, readily absorbed, water soluble glucose base to aid recovery for optimum performance.

Many owners will also notice that their horses consume less in warmer weather, but as it gets warmer horses will require more energy for training and competing.  Energy dense feeds that provide concentrate sources of calories are particularly useful for horses that have a limited appetite, providing the horse with a higher calorific meal without increasing the volume of feed.

Designed to be fed a soft moist feed Rowen Barbary manufacture a range of mashes & treats that can also be used to help ensure sufficient water intake during warmer weather.  Fed soaked  they have a  “water holding” capacity which will help improve fluid intake, especially useful post exercise, when travelling or recovering from illness to encourage your horse or pony to drink.
