Tumeric- 3% Curcumin
Key Points:
- Joint aid
- Anti-inflammatory
- Antioxidant
Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is a pleasantly scented, earthy spice from the ginger plant family. The naturally occurring qualities in turmeric make it an amazingly versatile and useful supplement to add to your horse or ponies’ diet. *In a clinical trial with 6 horses, they found the anti-inflammatory qualities in Turmeric were aiding the three horses being fed with 50 mg of turmeric (containing 3.19% curcumin) suffering with fetlock joint arthritis, they found after 10 days of Turmeric supplementation they were noticeably more mobile and had an improved mood.
Turmeric is commonly supplemented with black pepper to increase bioavailability to promote well-being and overall health. Curcumin has also been linked to lowering inflammation of joints in **one study involving 7 mares with chronic osteoarthritis and 15 foals with osteochondrosis it was found that it decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine production and increased anti-inflammatory cytokine production in all horses. Due to turmeric’s de-inflammatory quality, it makes it ideal for supporting recovery, this reduction in post-exercise inflammation could improve recovery. Curcumin is fat-soluble (dissolves better in oil than water), so feeding it with a fat source such as linseed oil or soya oil can help to increase its absorption.
