Christa Davis - #RBTeam

Christa Davis, Show Horse Producer is the latest rider to join the Rowen Barbary Team. Based on the Devon/Cornwall boarder, Christa has a super team of horses aimed at the highest possible level that they can reach.

How many horses are on your yard?

Currently we have 3 RoR's and 1 Hunter/Irish Draught Sports Horse. I'm soon to be starting the process of buying a new and bigger yard so the 2 Connemaras and Ridden Coloured can join the team full time.

Tell us about your most memorable horse or pony?

Roxstar (Roxy), our 5 Year Old Hunter.

We produced her ourselves from a unhandled 2 Year Old (Our biggest challenge to date!). First show out she Won, Stood Champion Hunter In-Hand, Best Hunter in Show, Best Led Hunter then Overall Reserve Supreme. She stayed unbeaten in hand for two seasons before going on to being shown under saddle.

Pony would have to be Barmoor Ruaridh (Rory).

Rory is the apple of his owners eye and has been through a lot. Surviving laminitis twice, suffering with EMS & undergoing a life changing operation on his Cruciate Ligament where the prognosis of soundness was VERY small. Rory has a huge heart and an even bigger attitude. We started off on the flat, then contesting in HOYs Working Hunter Classes and I finally decided to produce him sidesaddle which he loves.

What have been your high points and achievements to date?

Roxy standing 2nd at Three Counties in her first class under-saddle.

Charlie's first Novice Ridden Show- Winning and standing Champion.

Rory winning the Sidesaddle Equitation & Concours d'elegance classes then standing Champion at the SSADL Olympia Champs.

Malibu winning all her ridden classes in her first ever show season.

Last seasons achievements meant a lot to myself, my owners and team as I was just finishing my treatment for Breast Cancer. Without their support it wouldn't of been possible.

What are your goals for 2017?

Qualify Roxy for HOYs.

Qualify Rory for Olympia.

Qualify Charlie for HOYs.

But most of all to have a fun and successful season!

Have you got any top tips?

  • Don't be afraid to ask- Whether its a producer for tips/guidance or a Feed Specialist about what diet suits your horse.
  • Do your homework at home- I was always told this when producing horses for a dealer I worked for. If you have an issue or need to practice something, perfect it at home before going to a competition.
  • Have Fun and Smile- We all get stressed, whether its because your grey horse has more poo stains then normal on a show day or you are soaking wet before you've even gone into your class. The last thing a judge wants to see is someone who doesn't look like they want to be there, after all you can always go back and sit in the lorry when your done, they have to carry on for the rest of the day!

Favourite Rowen Barbary products:

ReadyMash Extra; we use this all year round on the Hunters and Show horses, their weight looks super BUT healthy and their coats are always glossy.

Beetroot and Carrot Mash; these are brilliant for hiding antibiotics in.
